Continuing the Legacy of “FISHER”

Elijah John “Pookey” Fisher, III had vision of owning his funeral home. The dream became a reality in March, 1963 when he opened Fisher Funeral Parlor in Durham, North Carolina.  Fittingly, the first parlor was across the street from White Rock Baptist Church (pastored by his father, Dr. Miles Mark Fisher).

From the first location in the former home of Mrs. Annie Maggie Lennon at 611 Mobile Avenue, “Service for All Within the Means of All” began to grace Durham and surrounding areas.  One of his first primary benefactors was Daniel Eric Moore, dean of the North Carolina College School of Library Science.

In 1970 after being displaced by Urban Renewal, the business moved to 2500 Fayetteville Street.  Three years later, it moved to its location, 3137 Fayetteville Street.

Fisher Funeral Parlor has served persons across all economic levels with dignity and compassion.  It featured the only funeral home in Durham to use Presidential High Top Cadillac Limousines.

“Pookey”  was licensed as a funeral director and embalmer for more than 55 years.
