Julia Mae Spencer was born on August 5, 1930 to the late Robert Louis and Bessie Barber Spencer in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She lived in Durham from the age of 6 months until her death at her home on Sunday, July 22, 2018.
She graduated from Hillside High School in 1947 and attended North Carolina Central University. She was employed by North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company initially as a tour guide before serving as secretary to the late Viola Turner, its first female treasurer. She later served as secretary to Dr. George H. Conklin, chair of the sociology department at NCCU for 20 years.
She will be remembered as a faithful member of St. Titus’ Episcopal Church and strong supporter of the programs and activities sponsored by the church
She is survived by her cousins: Eric Ingram (Hyacinth) of Durham; Geraldine R. Murphy of Washington DC; Rev. Carolyn Hodge, Maryland; Gail Ingram Hall of Fort Worth, Texas; and Doris Ingram of Rosedale, New York; and her godchildren: Glynis Whitted-Bell, Dana Michelle Whitted, Matthew Jenkins, and James DBerry III; and her caretaker: Addie Jane Johnson-Chavis, and a host of friends.
Memorial Services for Ms. Julia Spencer will be held Monday, July 30, 2018 at St. Titus’ Episcopal Church, 400 Moline Street, Durham NC 27707 at 11:00 am. A family visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Memorial donations may be sent to the Building Fund, St. Titus’ Episcopal Church.
