Rev. Dennis Garrett Davis, Pastor, Pilgrim Baptist Church, born May 12, 1951 to the late Hushel and Mary Davis departed this walk of life on Monday, September 30, 2019.
Rev. Davis attended Central High School, Bridgeport, CT. He furthered his education by attending Housatonic Community College, Shaw Divinity School and Vance Granville Community College. He attended Miracle Faith Church, Bridgeport, CT. He founded Victory Deliverance Center. In 1982 he and his family relocated to Durham, North Carolina. Rev. Davis joined Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Willie T. Thornton. After Rev. Thornton’s death, Pastor Davis was installed as Pastor in December, 1992.
First of all, Pastor Davis's first love was his love for God. Secondly, he married the love of his life from high school, 1st Lady Sylvia Davis. He loved to spend time in his workshop repairing and creating personalized gifts. He loved spending time and traveling with his family. He played basketball in high school and was an avid fan of UNC, Chapel Hill. Pastor Davis was very caring, wise and dedicated. He was very protective of his family. He was formerly employed at Liggett Myers and Duke University, receiving an Employee Recognition Award at Duke University. He was a straight shooter, would not sugar coat an incident. He loved chocolate chip cookies. He loved to sing praise and worship hymns and would open every sermon with a song.
Pastor leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, 1st Lady Sylvia Davis, one son: Sean Davis of Oxford; three daughters: Tracine Hampton of New Jersey, Crystal Davis of Goldsboro, NC and Melissa Ashley (Chad) of Stem, NC; sisters: Barbara Young of West Haven, CT and Yvonne Shannon of Bridgeport, CT; brothers: Roger Davis (Alma) of Trumbull, CT and Gilbert Davis of Bridgeport, CT; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, in addition to a host of loving relatives and friends. Preceding him in death, his brother, Hushel Davis, Jr. and sister, Earline Davis.
