Alfred Kenneth Rogers was born in Durham. NC July 23, 1952, to the late Annie Belle Gilmore Rogers and James Marshall Rogers Sr. He was their 5th child and the 3rd son of the family.
Alfred attended Durham Public Schools graduating in 1970 from Hillside High School located then on Concord Street. Alfred participated in athletics and theater productions like “Mr. G’s Swing School” (A popular school performance). After graduation, Alfred enrolled at Durham Technical College. After one semester he decided to join The United States Navy to “See the World.” He served in the Navy from 1971-1978 aboard the aircraft carriers USS Kennedy and USS Enterprise. While serving, he never forgot his family, sending elephants to his Mom (an avid collector) from the countries he visited.
Alfred grew up in Mount Vernon Baptist Church. This was an understood decision because our great-grandparents helped organize this church. Alfred participated in the Youth Program under the direction of Dr. Rose Butler Brown’s “Training Camp.” He participated in many activities and annual productions for Easter and Christmas. He also held a position on the Board of Mount Vernon Baptist Church Credit Union.
Alfred was a hard worker all of his life. After his military service, he returned home. He was employed by the American Tobacco Company, where he worked until the Durham plant closed. He also worked for the Federal Paper Board, Boston Market, Security at South Square Mall, City of Durham Water and Sewer, and Duke Medical Center Department of Environmental Services.
Alfred enjoyed fishing, sports, and being a “Social Butterfly”. He never met a stranger and was known for his sense of humor and love of life. He was a committed caregiver to his mother Annie Belle Gilmore Rogers for the last 7 years of her life. He was her company, cook, and friend …a good son. He loved children, and although he had no biological ones, he was a surrogate Dad to six children: Quentin, Chinita, Dawn, Courtney, Robert, and Royce.
Alfred leaves to cherish his memory, three siblings Marcia Rogers Barbee of Accokeek, MD., Ronald Washington Rogers (Jo Ann) of Durham, and Charlene Rogers, Taylor of Durham, NC., twelve nieces and nephews, twelve great nieces and nephews, eight great-great nieces and nephews. Former wives in his life’s journey: Valerie Whitted, Estralita Lee, and Judy Jones, and many cousins and friends.
Special Thanks to Jada Shurles a supportive caregiver and friend.
