Alfred Jammar Smoke, son of Minster Elijah Smoke and Mrs. Geneva Smoke was born on August 19, 1957. He departed this life on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at 8:00pm at Duke University Hospital. Alfred, was affectionately known as “Skeeter” and “Smoke Man”. At an early age he attend Scarborough Nursery and later attended Durham Public Schools. He graduated from Hillside High School in 1975. After graduation he attended school in Rock Hill, South Carolina from 1976 to 1979. Where he received a scholarship to play basketball. He loved playing basketball and played it well, and made sure people knew he was a winner. In his latter career he worked at the University of North Carolina as a mail carrier.
Alfred had the love and affection for all that came in contact with him, he had a wonderful sense of humor and a million dollar smile. He was a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed home cooked meals and a cold Pepsi. He loved watching basketball games. His favorite team was Duke. Alfred was a big man, with soft heart, full of love and comfort, he was a beautiful soul.
He was married to Angela Hackney in June of 1992 and from that union a daughter was born. Ms. Akiyah Narie Smoke. He loved spoiling his baby girl. His legacy will be cherished by his grandson Chace Lo'Mar Whitsett, who he loved dearly; his two brothers: Burnice E. Smoke (Bettye) of Fort Washington, Maryland; Donald S. Smoke of Durham NC; five sisters: Apostle Sara Tucker; Apostle Dorothy Jackson; both of Lakewood New Jersey.; Yvonne Daniels; Jacqueline Privette (Carl); “His ride or die”, Wanna S. Farrington, all of Durham NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; and his dear friend Natesha Everette.
