MRS. ALICE ELIZABETH HINES JONES GUNN, daughter of Joseph P. and Mary Alice Burnette Hines, (both deceased), was born July 29, 1924 in Durham, NC. She departed this life on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the Duke Hospice Hock Pavilion.
She was educated in the Durham City School, and furthered her education at North Carolina College (NCCU), and N. C. State University of Raleigh, NC.
Mrs. Jones was employed as secretary to the Director of Lincoln Hospital for many years. Upon leaving Lincoln, she became the first Black secretary to a manager at IBM in the Research Triangle Park. She worked there until she retired in 1987.
Alice married Robert Lee Jones (Deceased) in 1943. They had three sons (one deceased) and one daughter. In later years, they gained another daughter.
She joined Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ in her early adult life, giving her life to the Lord. She participated in many activities of the church, served on the Board of Directors of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ, representing the Eastern N. C. Association. She served on community boards: the Campus Ministry for NCCU, Durham Congregations in Actions, etc.
She was ordained a Deacon of Mt. Calvary in 1987.
In 1988 Alice married Henry L. Gunn, Jr., (deceased) and gained seven more children.
Alice had 4 sisters (all deceased)-Willie Mae Jones, Janie Davis, Georgia Tyler, and Brenda Burns (Linwood); and 2 brothers-(both deceased)-John H. Hines, Sr. (Christine), and Joseph P. Hines, Jr.
She leaves to celebrate her life, her children: Robert L. Jones, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Atlanta; Ronald Jones, Claudette Jones, Mary Vaughan of Durham; the Gunn children; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a very special and dear sister, Dora L. Roberson; and a host of other friends.
