Betsy JoAnn Johnson departed this life peacefully at home on Friday, December 1, 2023. JoAnn was born on October. 20, 1944, in Durham, N.C. to the late Albert and Mamie Elizabeth Hayes Johnson. She was wed to Levi Johnson. Their marriage of love and respect lasted 31 years and they had one son, Jeffrey Lamont Johnson.
JoAnn received her education at Lyon Park Elementary, Whitted School and Hillside High School (Class of 1962). As a teenager, JoAnn worked at The Chicken Box (later called the Chicken Hut) alongside her late sister, Peggy. She later attended Durham Business College and worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Duke Eye Center. After retiring from Duke to care for Levi in his final years, JoAnn returned to her role of working with Peggy, sister Ruth Dash and other family members at The Chicken Hut until her illness. But her most cherished job was caring for her two grandnieces, Jade and Leah Tapp, earning her the affectionate title of “Aunt NaNa.”
JoAnn enjoyed a myriad of passions. After joining White Rock Baptist Church through her husband, she became a dedicated member and deaconess at the church. Until the end, JoAnn faithfully watched their weekly services online when she was no longer able to attend in person. Known for her homemade biscuits, salmon cakes and gingerbread, she loved to share her cooking with others. JoAnn was also a member of the Daughters A.E.A.O.N.M.S. and Fleur de Lis Club. In her later years, she enjoyed watching Steve Harvey on Family Feud and other game shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and the Price is Right.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Johnson; her parents; brothers Albert Marcus Johnson, William MacArthur “Red” Johnson and Ronald Lee Johnson; and sister, Peggy Johnson Tapp.
Delores Johnson Tapp; brothers-in-law, Claiborne Tapp, Jr. and Jacob Abraham Dash; one uncle, the Rev. Everett Johnson, Sr.; nephews Jonathan Johnson and Jerrold Anthony Dash; and other cherished sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Jeffrey Lamont Johnson (Christine); her sister, Mary Ruth Dash; aunts Yvonne Johnson and Lethia Peace Johnson; special nephew Claiborne “Tre” Tapp III (“KD”) and a host of other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
The family acknowledges and deeply appreciates the many acts of kindness and support extended to them through the years and in the passing of our loved one. Special thanks to her dedicated caregivers Shinnie McClain, Tasha and Chantrell Lewis. The love of lifelong friends Mrs. Mary Thomas and Mrs. Minnie Bridgers will always be remembered.
