Brenda Joyce Loftin, second child born to the late Johnnie Rayford Loftin and Brenda A. Loftin, was born on June 8, 1962 in Yonkers, NY. Her book of life was peacefully closed at sunset on November 18, 2021.
Brenda, as known to some and Joyce as known to most, received her early elementary school education from PS-13, Yonkers, NY, before her family moved to Durham, NC in 1972. She attended Y.E. Smith Elementary, Durham, NC, for her last year of elementary schooling before attending Holton Junior High, Durham, NC, for her middle school years.
While at Holton, Joyce was an excellent “A” student and spirited cheerleader. It was during these years that her schoolmates affectionately nicknamed her Mousy and Peanut because of her quiet demeanor and short stature.
For her high school years, Joyce attended Hillside High School, Durham, NC, where she continued her “A” student excellence and consistently achieved "A" Honor Roll status. She was an active member of future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), which was where she gained her exceptional business skills and developed a love for working with numbers.
After graduating Hillside High School in 1980, Joyce continued her education at Durham Technical Community College, Durham, NC,
before entering the workforce at the now defunct Durham Drapery and Compuchem Laboratories, both in the NC Triangle area.
Joyce later worked for a few years with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina as a healthcare claims processor and in 2001 began working with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill system, first in the medical system's Radiology Department as an Accounting Technician before transferring to the University ’s History Department, in the same role. It is in the University’s History Department where Joyce found her true work “family” and where she excelled at her craft. Her patience, attention to detail, love for order, working with numbers and efficiency resulted in her being recognized often by her department for her commitment to excellence, receiving her numerous accolades and awards. Joyce remained employed with UNC -Chapel Hill until the time of her illness and was on a valiant recovery path, with a goal of returning to active employment with her endearing work family by May 2022.
To know Joyce was to know love. She was humble, kind and giving, with an old soul and beautifully vibrant smile that, when shared, would warm the coldest heart.
For leisure, she enjoyed laughing with family and friends, putting together 1000 to 2000 piece jigsaw puzzles, watching movies, particularly Turner Classics, attending Bible study and listening to old school R&B music. Her infectious giggle had the innocents of youth, as did her love for fanciful unicorns and the majestic color of purple.
Joyce was proceeded in death by her brother, Anthony Leranzo Loftin (1993) and father, Johnnie Rayford Loftin (2020).
She leaves to cherish her memories, her mother, Brenda A. Loftin, Durham, NC; one sister, Qwanda Fisher-Jones (Troy), Greensboro, NC; four uncles, Morris Lee and Robert Lee (Colleen), both of Charlotte, NC and William Lee, Jr. (Roxann) of Winston -Salem, NC and Reginald Hodges, of Kinston, NC; ten aunts, Edna Carter of Baltimore, MD, Juanita Holmes Barnes and Colleen Lee, both of Charlotte, NC, Roxann Lee of Winston -Salem, NC, Melissa Ann Brown and Elnora Dewitt, both of Goldsboro, NC, Mildred Loftin of Fredericksburg, VA, Carrie Loftin of Winston-Salem, NC, Irene Loftin and Queen Loftin, both of Mt. Vernon, NY.; two nieces, Tewanoa Antonette Caviness of Durham, NC, and Ashi Loftin of Irving, TX; three nephews, Ashawnti Loftin of Irving, TX, Jourdain Fisher of Brooklyn, NY, and Tristen Jones, of Greensboro, NC, a host of cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
