Brenda Scarborough Obituary

Brenda Joyce Scarborough passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, surrounded by love and devotion. Born in Durham, North Carolina, Brenda lived a life marked by grace, dedication, and service to others.

A proud graduate of Hillside High School in Durham in 1968, Brenda was an active student who brought spirit and energy to her school as both a cheerleader and majorette. Her journey took her to Atlanta, Georgia in 1976, where she spent fourteen years before returning to her beloved hometown of Durham in 1990.

Brenda built a distinguished professional career, working for many years as a paralegal before transitioning to serve as Executive Administrative Assistant to the Athletic Director at North Carolina Central University. She brought professionalism and warmth to her role at NCCU until her retirement in 2013.

In November 2011, Brenda was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, a challenge she faced with courage and faith. Following her retirement in 2013, she moved in with her daughter, Dayshonda, whose unwavering love and care as her mother's primary caregiver was a testament to the deep bond they shared. Dayshonda remained faithfully by her mother's side until the very end.

In 1992, Brenda's spiritual life flourished when she was introduced to the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research (IDMR), founded by Dr. Henry Clifford Kinley. She became a devoted member in 1993 and joyfully contributed to the community by singing in the choir and serving in whatever capacity she could to help promote the gospel of Dr. Kinley, who is Yahweh our Elohim or God in a body. Brenda’s faith in her Heavenly Father never wavered and preached Dr. Kinley with her last breath.

Brenda leaves behind a legacy of love through her family: her brother Ronald “Ron,” Jr. (Toya); her sister Deborah “Deb”; her son Derek (Shannon); her daughter Dayshonda “Shon” (Lee); her cherished grandchildren Derek, Jr., Kirstyn, Drake, Kaitlyn, and Antoinette (Pete); ten great-grandchildren; three nephews Terrence "T.R.", Nicholas “Nick” (Chantille), and Remington; and niece Deanna.

Brenda's memory will be treasured by all who knew her, and her spirit of service, faith, and family will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
