FACE MASKS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED!!!

Charles “Jack” Maurice Bennett was born on June 15, 1939 in Washington, DC to Lucy Veora Bennett and Charles Maurice Bennett, Sr.  His family moved to Jersey City, New Jersey where he was raised along with his sisters Josephine “Jo” and Rae, and his brother Robert “Bobby.” He was privileged to have a host of family in the North, but his Mother always kept close to her southern roots.  He and his siblings had many fond memories of summers spent in North Carolina with their maternal family and he continued to return there throughout his lifetime.

While attending Henry Snyder High School, Charles joined the National Guard in 1957 and was honorably discharged 8 years later. After high school, he received an associate’s degree from Brooklyn Community College and graduated in 1964 from New Jersey City University with a degree in teaching and special education. He ran track as a high hurdler and joined the fencing team while in college. In 1984, Charles was inducted into the New Jersey City University Sports Hall of Fame for track & field and fencing.

Charles taught special education in West New York, New Jersey before moving to Detroit, Michigan. He attended Wayne State University in Detroit receiving a masters degree in counseling and was hired by Ferndale High School as a counselor. Charles valued education and inspired many of his students to pursue college and further education. He retired from Ferndale High School in 1991. He always had a love for investing in real estate and through the years purchased, renovated, leased, and sold multiple family units in Detroit.

Over the years he continued his athletic pursuits and became an avid downhill skier and golfer. He joined the Jim Dandy Ski Club including their race team and won or placed in many ski races  in Michigan, Canada and western United States ski resorts. Charles met Lois Ellen Freeman while skiing in Canada and they married in 1991 in Detroit.

One of Charles’ fondest memories was his travel to Africa in 1971 and again in 1973 with his brother Robert when they climbed the Mount Kilimanjaro. Over the past 32 years, Charles and Lois traveled extensively to Europe, South America, Asia and Africa for both business and pleasure. They retired and moved to Florida in 2016 to enjoy golfing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Lois Bennett, daughter Christina Bennett Pennington, (Hon. Scott Pennington), grand-daughter Christina Jordan Larrosa (Brandon Larrosa, son Aiden Larrosa), and great-granddaughter Sofia Larrosa.  He also leaves his beloved siblings, sisters Josephine Bennett and Rae Bennett, brother Robert Bennett (Valada Bennett), and brother-in-law Floyd Carter Freeman (Ann Freeman), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
