Donald Shelton Smoke, Sr., son of the late Minister Elijah Smoke and Geneva Hackney Smoke, was born on March 23, 1947 in Durham, North Carolina. He departed this life on June 16, 2022 at his home in Durham, North Carolina.
Donald was known as “Smoke” or “Donald Duck”.
At an early age, he attended the John Avery Boys Club under the directors of the late Lee Smith and David Parker.
He attended W. G. Pearson School, Whitted Junior High School and graduated from Hillside High School in 1968. He excelled in basketball and was a track star. He attended Winston-Salem State University.
Donald joined Mount Calvary United Church of Christ at an early age.
He worked at Mead Containers. He was also a successful brick mason.
He leaves to cherish his memory, three sons, Vincent (Crab) Garner and Donald S. Smoke Jr. of Sanford, N.C. and Derrick King of Durham, NC; one daughter, Tiffany Smoke Carrington (Antonio) of Durham, NC. Donald was a proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Burnise Elijah Smoke (Betty) of Fort Washington, MD; five sisters, Apostle Sarah Tucker and Apostle Dorothy Jackson of Lakewood, NJ, Ms. Yvonne S. Daniel, Ms. Wanna S. Farrington and Mrs. Jacqueline S. Privette (Carl) of Durham, NC; his very special friend, Delphine Allen of Durham, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
