Doris Alicia (Prince) Clapp, daughter of the late Rufus Frederick and Dorothy Gilchrist Prince, was born on June 7, 1948 in Durham County, North Carolina. On June 18, 2021, she went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ.
She grew up in Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Fayetteville Street right beside her grandmother’s home-Rosabelle Gilchrist. She became a member of White Rock Baptist Church later in life and was a proud member of the Scholarship Committee.
She received her early education in the public schools of Durham County and graduated from Hillside High School, Class of 1966. She attended North Carolina Central University where she studied in the Department of Education and graduated in 1971. Doris’ career was spent mostly in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System where she taught at Ephesus Elementary School and Carrboro Elementary School. She retired from education in 2008 after briefly teaching and being an A+ curriculum facilitator at Banner Elk Elementary.
Doris met William J. Clapp, Sr. and they married on June 17, 1976. After retirement, they moved to Banner Elk, North Carolina where they became members of Cornerstone Summit Church in Boone, NC.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, William Jerome Clapp, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory, her three children: April C. Lee, of Greensboro, NC; William J. Clapp, Jr. of Birmingham, AL; and Alicia C. Miller of Durham, NC; 9 grandchildren – Kathryn, Brittany, Randon, Allyx, Javon, Giovonnie, Jasmyn, Jayden, and Korey; sisters: Claudia A. Prince, Wilma P. Holman (Larry), Rose P. Russell (Stephen), Constance M. Prince, and Catherine D. Prince; a host of nieces and nephews and beloved long-time friends.
