Mrs. Geneva Jones Redding was born on September 9, 1928, second daughter of the late Joe Henry Jones and Mollie Crisp Jones in Albemarle County, North Carolina. Her family left North Carolina at an early age and moved to Virginia where she began her formal education and resided in the home of her maternal grandparents; Albert and Daisy Ida Crisp. She returned to North Carolina in the 1940’s where she met and married the late Charles McArthur Redding.
Their union was blessed with 6 children, Julia Redding Bryant, Iris (Moore) Redding, Janette Redding, Helen Redding, Kenneth Redding and Clayton Redding. Mrs. Redding through her children became the family matriarch with more than 20 off spring as grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother.
During her early years, Mrs. Redding worked as a domestic, hospital laundry worker, restaurant kitchen worker, and patient transporter at Duke Medical Center. She earned a GED at Durham Technical Institute after the age of 40; and earned her 1st career position as a seamstress in a downtown Durham dress shop after the age of 40. In addition, she worked as alterations and seamstress at Quik as a Wink Cleaners and was hired as a seamstress at Belk-Leggett at South Square Mall at the age of 50 and she worked there until her retirement age of 65. Mrs. Redding completed the course of study to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the age of 65 and she cared for the terminally ill for the next 10 years.
Mrs. Redding is a member of the Masonic Order…Eastern Star, Heroine of Jericho, Daughter of the North, Daughter of the South, Past Grand Matron of the State of North Carolina Sirens
For more than 60 years, Mrs. Redding has been a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Durham North Carolina where she was a member of the Kingdom Seekers Adult Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Redding passed away of natural causes on December 9th. Mom, we are so very proud of you and grateful to God for having loaned you to us for 92 memory filled years. We could not have had a better set of stewards over our lives as was provided by you and dad.
