FACE MASKS ARE STRONGLY URGED!!!

Genevee Venoid Alston Dillard, 83, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away on September 20th after an eventful and rewarding life.

Genevee was born on July 23, 1941 in Moncure, North Carolina, the second oldest born to the late Rev. Dr. Wavie R. Alston and Minnie B. Slade Alston. She graduated from Horton High School in Pittsboro in 1959, where she played the clarinet and faithfully served as one of the school bus drivers.

She then attended North Carolina Central University, where she participated in the marching band, relishing in the opportunity to march in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. She eventually earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in music, solidifying her love and appreciation for all things melodious.

One evening, at a homecoming service in Goldston, she caught the eye of Allen C. Dillard as she displayed her organ-playing skills. They married and went on to have three children: Allen, Jr., Sheremy, and Bernard. Over her life span, she was employed at several establishments, including Dillard’s Bar-B-Que and International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). Further, she loved to sew, paint, and maintain her garden.

After her working years, she loved to spend her time watching and commentating NFL and NBA games. An avid traveler, she visited a number of destinations, several of which include Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and Cabo San Lucas. She never met a stranger and had a way of making all feel welcome with her infectious laughter and unassuming demeanor.

Genevee was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother Jerome Alston, and her sister Jacqueline Alston Tedder.

She is survived by her children; her siblings: Gloria Alston Taylor, Hilda Alston Parlér, Wavey Alston, Ruban Alston, Gwendolyn Alston McNeal, and Yolanda Alston; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

A special thank you goes out to Duke University’s home hospice team, especially to Lisa, Genevee’s head nurse.
