REFLECTIONS

————

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have for his appearing.  II Timothy 4: 7-8 NIV

Son/Grandson

On July 27, 1941, John and Viola Waller became the proud parents of George Otha Waller.  He was affectionately, called Georgie Buck by his mother.  At the tender age of 8 years old, George’s mother passed away and he and his siblings were raised by their grandparents, Adolphus ‘Red’ and Bertha Burton.

Brother

George was the proud brother of three brothers, Charles, Richard, and Robert; two sisters, Ethel “Faye” and Bertha “Missy”.  They shared a close bond; it was always on display every Sunday with food, love and laughter.

Husband/Father

On February 14, 1970, George was joined in Holy Matrimony to Thelma Witherspoon.  God blessed this union with fifty-two years of love.  George was a loving father to two daughters, Vanessa and Stephanie and one son, Maurice.

Grandfather

George earned the title of grandpa on December 26, 1991 to his favorite and only granddaughter, Chelsea.  These two could light up Durham with their smiles and that’s what they attempted to do anytime they were together.

Uncle

George was an uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and reveled in being there for each one of his nieces and nephews.  Always available to listen, offer advice and a helping hand.

Surrogate Father/Grandfather

George had various nicknames ranging from Curious George, Georgie Porgie, Po George, Goddie Grand and simply Friend.  There wasn’t a child and/or adult that didn’t find a father figure or friend in him.  He reveled at the opportunity to be of assistance, bring comfort or offer some sage wisdom but always with a smile.

Education/Military

George attended Merrick-Moore School in Durham, NC for his early education until he graduated. After graduating, George joined the United States Navy where he served four years.  He later attended Durham Business College earning an associate's degree and eventually Shaw University to complete his Bachelor’s degree.

Employment

George worked at the International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation within the Research Triangle Park, NC for over 25+ years holding several positions in management until his retirement in 1996.  He later obtained his Real Estate Broker’s license and worked to ensure family and friends were knowledgeable of the process when becoming new homeowners or buying or selling their property.

Religion

George was a committed member and served in various roles of the churches he called home (North East Baptist Church, Mount Sinai Missionary Church, Compassion Ministries of Durham and Union Baptist Church).  Having been strongly influenced by his grandfather’s example, George always strived to be consistent and dependable even until his death.  His last request of God was for more time so he could continue to spread God’s message of love.

The legacy of George Otha Waller was his faith, his word, his character, his heart and his smile.

OBITUARY
