Grace Patricia Garrison, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on March 6, 2025. She was born on June 25, 1947, in Hanover, Jamaica, West Indies, to the late Lillian and Cleveland Garrison.
Grace spent her early years in Jamaica, where she attended Rusea’s High School and developed a deep appreciation for education and community. In the late 1960s, Grace moved to the United States, seeking new opportunities to continue her journey of service and dedication. She found her calling in nursing and earned nursing degrees from Elizabeth Seton College in 1984 and Rockland Community College in 1987. For more than three decades, she worked as a nurse, providing exceptional care with compassion, skill, and a kind heart. Her patients knew her as someone who always went above and beyond, offering both physical care and emotional comfort during their most vulnerable moments.
Beyond her nursing career, Grace had a deep love for gardening. She took great pride in the flowers, fruits, and vegetables she grew, always sharing the beauty of her garden and the bounty of her harvest with others. Cooking was another one of her passions. Grace’s home was a welcoming space, where she often invited family and friends to share a meal. She believed in the power of food to bring people together, and her generous spirit was reflected in the many gatherings she hosted with warmth, care, and attention to detail.
A doting grandmother, Grace lavished love and attention on her granddaughters, Maya and Ella. She was an active, hands-on nana in their lives, picking them up from school and shuttling them to and from their extracurricular activities. Weekends at her house meant lots of fun cooking in the kitchen, hanging out at the mall, or watching movies. Even across the miles, Nana Grace would faithfully send care packages filled with sweets, clothes, stuffed animals, and other fun items to shower the girls with affection. Despite the distance, her thoughtful surprises made it feel like she was always right there with them, offering her warm, unwavering support and making every occasion feel special.
Grace was also a devoted member of White Rock Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina. She was actively involved in several ministries, dedicating her time and energy to supporting her faith community. Her deep faith guided her acts of generosity, compassion, and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Grace is survived by her daughter, Nicole, and son-in-law, Enrique; her two adored granddaughters, Maya and Ella; her sister, Marcia; her brothers, Kenrick, Donald, and Eric; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends who will deeply miss her warmth, kindness, and loving spirit. She was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Cleveland; her brothers, Cleve, Maurice, and Norman; and her sisters, Phyllis and Patricia.
Grace’s life was a testament to the power of love, care, and selflessness. Her memory will forever bloom like the flowers in her garden, inspiring all who were fortunate enough to know her. She may no longer be with us physically, but her spirit lives on in the love she shared and the countless lives she touched.
