Janetta S (Stewart) Steele

Janetta S. Stewart Steele, known to her family and friends as “Jan,” peacefully passed on from this earthly life on April 15, 2020 after a brief illness.

Jan was born on May 26, 1946 in Durham, NC to parents John S. “Shag” Stewart and Otelia J. Spaulding Stewart.

She spent her early years in Durham attending Durham City Schools, graduating from Hillside High School in 1964. Following high school she attended Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing in May of 1968.

Jan then moved to Dayton, Ohio to take a position at Wright State University. While living in Dayton she met her husband, Charles E. “Roy” Steele and they married on April 19, 1969. The couple moved to Durham in 1973 to pursue other careers with Jan becoming a REALTOR® from which she retired after many years. To their marriage was born a son, Sean E. Steele now of Garner, NC, born on February 25, 1972.

Jan was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a charter member of the Triangle Park Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. She was a member of the Hillside Class of ’64 which she dearly loved, and they loved her.

She is survived by her husband Roy, son Sean, brother James “Jimmy” Stewart (Frances Dyer), and countless relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
