Joel (Joey) Lamar Douglas was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan on May 2, 1970. This bundle of pure Joy was the son of the late Willie Loris Johnson and Hazel L. Douglas. He departed this life on August 20, 2023 at the age of 53 at Duke University Medical Center.
In 1971, the family moved to North Carolina, eventually, moving to Durham, North Carolina. In Durham, Joel joined The Church of the Abiding Savior, Lutheran around the age of 10 and was baptized. Joel served as an acolyte at the church during his youth, and in recent years, enjoyed serving meals at Urban Ministries of Durham and distributing water to income NCCU students with the congregation’s Outreach Ministry.
Joel delighted in spending the summers and holidays down on the family farm with his grandparents Bennie and Pansy. He enjoyed going to the Raleigh Farmer’s Market with his grandfather to sell produce early in the mornings. Joel also enjoyed spending time with his many cousins.
Joel was educated in the Public Schools of Durham County and Lee County, NC. He graduated from Lee County Central High School in Sanford, NC. After high school, he attended Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) in Sanford, NC after which he transferred to Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC.
He was employed at Duke University Medical Center as a Computer Tech for a few years. He later moved to Atlanta, GA where he was employed in retail.
Joel was preceded in death by his father, Willie Loris Johnson; his much adored grandparents, Bennie and Pany Douglas; and his stepfather, Oliver Earl Atwater.
He is survived by his loving mother Hazel D. Atwater; brothers, Olier Atwater, Jr. (Angela) and Brandon Atwater (Sara); one uncle, James R. Douglas (Ruthie); and a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
