Mildred Maggie Leak Mitchell, daughter of the late Charles McRae and Dicie Leak McRae, was born March 14, 1932 in Laurinburg, North Carolina. She departed this life on Monday, March 14, 2022 at Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina.
Mildred was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She loved her plants, cooking, singing, crossword puzzles and her stories. Mildred loved her neighborhood, Southside Community, she was everyone’s honorary grandmother. You could always see her sitting on her porch, waving at every car. Mildred was a caring and generous woman, who would feed anyone that came over.
Mildred attended Pilgrim Baptist Church of Durham faithfully until her health declined. She sang in a host of choirs and sat on The Mother Board. She was always available to bring her famous cabbage and cornbread to any event at the church.
Mildred is preceded in death by one daughter, Yvonne Covington. She leaves to cherish three sons, Theodore Mitchell, Jr. (Carolyn), Michael Mitchell, Sr. (Kathy) and Craig Mitchell (Sheila); four daughters: Linda Leak Vincent (Clarence), Oretta Cooper (Renard), Elsie Choates (Terry) and Annie Mitchell (Vick); two sisters, Ella Mae Lathan, Carrie Mae Council and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
