Ms. Mozel Wilma Harris, daughter of the late Robert and Julia Long Harris was born June 1, 1945 in Durham, NC. She departed this life on Monday, February 20, 2023. She was the sixth child of eight siblings.
She joined Red Mountain Baptist Church at an early age. There she attended Sunday School, was a member of the Junior Choir, the Usher Board, taught Vacation Bible School and served as Church Announcer.
She graduated from Little River High School in Bahama, NC in 1963, from North Carolina College, Durham, NC, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1968, and from North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC with a Master’s of Science Degree in 1985. She was inducted into the North Carolina Central University Golden Eagle Society.
After moving to Danville, VA, she joined White Rock Baptist Church under the Watch Care of Rev. Dr. Walter Tinsley, Pastor. She attended Sunday School and was a member of the Service Christ Club.
Her professional career covered over forty-seven years of teaching Health and Physical Education. She worked in the Person County School System, Roxboro, NC; Charlotte Court House County School System, Charlotte Court House, VA and Pittsylvania County School System, Gretna and Chatham, VA.
Mozel was an avid sports fan. She loved all sports. You may see her anytime watching a football or basketball game, giving player names, statistics and debating with her brother James or nephew Ricky. She also enjoyed bowling with her team in Danville.
She was past Worthy Matron of Lydia Chapter #74 Order of Eastern Star PHA, Danville, VA and a member of Almagro Chapter #75 Order of Eastern Star PHA, Danville, VA. She was also a member of Sisters of Color and a member of The Exterminators Bowler League of Danville, VA.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert L. Harris, Jr., two loving nephews, James E. Harris, Jr., Christopher E. Johnson and a loving niece, Aeedah J. Hamidullah.
She leaves to cherish her memories four sisters, Pauline H. Parker, Bahama, NC; Annie H. Cooper, Cleveland, OH; Rosa H. Johnson (Edgar) Rougemont, NC and Doretha H. Hamidullah (Matthew) Durham, NC; two brothers, James E. Harris (Pauline) Rougemont, NC and David L. Harris, Sr. (Gayle) Durham, NC; two aunts, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
