Nettie Elizabeth (Mitchiner) Alston

Nettie Elizabeth “Teddie” Mitchiner Alston was born on December 24, 1952, to the late Reginald and Margaret “Dada” Mitchiner as the youngest of seven children. With a heart full of peace, she was embraced by the Lord into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Duke Regional Hospital surrounded
by family and friends.

She joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and remained a member until her passing. Throughout the years of her membership, she actively participated in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, the Kitchen Ministry, the Church Nursery, and sang in the Young Adult Choir and the Senior
Choir.
She was educated in the Durham City Schools, attending all black schools through the 11th grade. But, to her dismay, she was forced to graduate from the formally all white Durham High School in 1971 instead of Hillside High School due to a desegregation order. At her 67th birthday party, she was awarded an
honorary diploma from Hillside, and it made her extremely happy. She received her B.S. Degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1975. She was employed by Liggett Group HQ and IBM Corporation prior to retiring from North Carolina State University in 2012.
She completed cosmetology training at Southeastern College of Beauty Culture in Charlotte and worked as a licensed cosmetologist while employed at IBM.
In 1980, she married Venore “Rick” Alston, and to this union was born their only child, Vernetta Alston.
He preceded her in death in 2021.
She lent her talents to a variety of causes, including making crocheted dolls and blankets for new babies of the Williams Family Circle for several years. She donated dolls for children in foster care and for New Hope’s Scholarship Ministry’s Silent Auction. It was nothing unusual for Nettie to give a hand-crafted
item as a gift, just to show her love for them.
In addition to her parents and Rick, Nettie was preceded in death by all of her siblings: Linwood Lee Mitchiner, Raymond Vincent Mitchiner, Durban Kendrick Mitchiner, Reginald Glennis Mitchiner, Charles Cary Mitchiner, and Mary Margaret Mitchiner-Street.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Vernetta (Courtney) of Durham; granddaughter, Reese and grandson, Davis, both of Durham; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Mitchiner of Roanoke, VA and Tervenia Mitchiner of Stone Mountain, GA; a host of relatives, friends, and her New Hope family.
