Newman Horatio Vaughan departed this earthly life to join his wife Latelle on January 15, 2022 at the age of 96. Newman was born in Kimberly, West Virginia on July 5, 1925 to William Wesley Vaughan and Louise (Davis) Vaughan.

At 18, Newman drafted into the Army during World War II where he served at Ft. Mead Maryland. Upon completing his service, Mr. Vaughan graduated from Bluefield State College where he was also inducted into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. There he met Latelle Lewis, the love of his life, when he heard her singing as he passed by her window. He graduated with a degree in Education. He later moved to Wrightsville, GA where he was the principal at Dock Kemp High School and helped to start the football and tennis team. The family then moved to Tyler, TX where he was a class ring salesman with Jostens. He later moved to Durham, NC where he remained a salesman for the company and a salesman of class portraits with Stanback Studios. He retired as a courier for Metpath.

Newman joined White Rock Baptist Church in the mid-1960’s under the pasturage of Rev. Miles Mark Fisher. He loved traveling, jazz, tennis, and the Philadelphia Eagles.

He is survived by one daughter Carol Vaughan Crocker (Joseph); three grandchildren, Nathan Crocker (Haley), Marcella Crocker McFadden (Dominique), and Angela Crocker Lewis (Xan); two great grandchildren, Vaughan Alexander and Riley Marcella McFadden; nieces Valerie Fulwood Stubblefield (Cornell), Cynthia Lewis Evans (D’Artagnan). Newman was preceded in death by his wife Latelle Elizabeth (Lewis) Vaughan, and a brother, Segal Wesley Vaughan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 22 at 1 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church. Masks and social distancing are required. Fisher Memorial Funeral Parlor is in charge of the arrangements.
