Phyllis Ann Wilson Arnold, daughter of the late Reverend Jack Wilson and the late Mary V. Wilson, was born on February 17, 1941, in Durham County, North Carolina.  She departed this life on Monday, April 8, 2024.

At an early age, she joined Lipscomb Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Hillsborough, NC where she remained a life member. For many years she was involved in the senior choir, the Pastor’s Aide Club, Missionary circle, and Sunday School. Previously, Phyllis Ann was also a member of The Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

Phyllis Ann graduated from Little River School, and went on to attend Elizabeth City State University, in Elizabeth City, NC.  She was employed by North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance company and later by North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill where she retired after 24 years.

She enjoyed staying busy in retirement. In the second chapter of her life, Phyllis poured her time and energy into creating her business and in 1992, she opened Phyl’s flowers.  She spent countless hours creating arrangements for weddings, funerals, anniversaries, and other special events.  You could usually find Phyl in her flower shop, elbows deep in flowers with her trusty hot glue gun by her side.

She paid great attention to detail. She worked hard to design arrangements that captured the essence of the occasion. Phyl had a true gift for floral design and her creativity was admired by her many repeat customers. She put her heart into whatever she did. People knew that if they received something from her, that she’d given it her all.

Phyllis Ann was also known for her great sense of humor and knack for finding just the right greeting card for almost every occasion. With a light-hearted disposition, you could depend on receiving a warm smile and a little chuckle when she greeted you. She will be remembered for how much she enjoyed serving the community through the gift of her flowers and for how she loved her family.

She is survived by her eldest sister, Hazel Harris of Bahama, NC. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Private First-Class James Arnold. Six siblings proceeding Phyllis Ann in death, Leroy Wilson, Frances Parker, Barbara Breeden, Amos Wilson Sr, Claudine Harris, Willie Wilson, and Stanley Wilson all of Durham. Also surviving are beloved nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
