On Saturday, March 2, 2024, God quietly called home our beloved son, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, Ralph Thomas “Tommy” Byrd. Ralph was born on July 3, 1948 in Durham, North Carolina to the late Warren Clinton Byrd, Jr. and Virginia Bullock Byrd.

Ralph was educated in the Durham Public Schools; however, he moved to New York City as a teenager and graduated from William Howard Taft High School in 1966. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at West Point Military Academy where he met his wife, Gail R. Roberts. He was trained as a paratrooper and a military police. He and Gail were married just before his deployment to Viet Nam in 1968. Ralph served in Viet Nam until 1970 receiving three Purple Hearts. He continued his service at Fort Bragg until his honorable discharge. After which, he served as a Durham Police Officer and several other jobs in Maryland, Geogia, and Durham.

Ralph leaves to cherish his loving memories, his mother, Virginia Byrd; three children: Keith Byrd, Nicole Byrd (his caregiver until she became ill), and Jason Byrd; two sisters, Elaine Flowers and Judy Dillard; two brothers, André Byrd and Warren Kelley; fourteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Gail Roberts Byrd, and his son, Ralph Kevin Byrd.
