Rev. Mack McCoy, Jr. Obituary

Mack McCoy Jr. was born at St. Vincent Hospital in Staten Island, New York, to the late Rev. Mack McCoy Sr. and Margaret McCoy. He graduated from Curtis High School and proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he served during the Korean War.

Following his honorable discharge, Mack worked as a skilled glass cutter. He later lived in Virginia before settling in Durham, North Carolina, where he spent many years employed as a chef at Duke University Hospital. In his free time, he enjoyed cooking and sharing cherished moments with his beloved Laverne, whom he affectionately called “Little One” for over 20 years.

Mack gained his heavenly wings on November 12, 2025—the day after Veterans Day. True to his spirit, he remained strong, determined, and full of pride until the end, often declaring his favorite phrase: “I’m all Army!” His strength was evident in the way he approached his health: informed, decisive, and always in charge. His medical decisions were made thoughtfully and lovingly with his daughter Shannon McCoy-Frith, his niece Milon McCoy-Clement, and his sister-in-law Sandra McCoy—each honoring his wish to remain independent, at home, and living life on his own terms.

Mack was also an ordained minister, following in the footsteps of his father, Rev. Mack McCoy Sr. His faith guided his life, his decisions, and the way he cared for others.

Mack had a deep passion for the arts. He penned his poetic works under the name “The Master of Dreams.” His published poems hang proudly on lobby walls, and he was also a gifted songwriter. His creativity was an essential part of who he was and a legacy he leaves behind.

He loved cooking, writing poetry, and listening to old-school R&B, jazz, and gospel. He enjoyed engaging conversations, especially about politics and spirited debates. His days were often filled with CNN and the Cowboy Channel. Known for his signature cowboy boots, wide-brimmed hats, and sharp three-piece suits, he carried himself with style, charm, and confidence.

Slow to anger and full of love, laughter, and life, he never met a stranger.

He was previously married to Dorothy B. McCoy, the mother of his two children, Mickey and Shannon. Although they later divorced, she remained an important part of his life story and has since preceded him in death.

Mack Jr. was the last surviving of his eight siblings: Christine McCoy, James (Joyce), Ruth (Mel) Haskell, Katie McCoy, Frank (Marie), Floyd (Amelia), Andrew, and John (Sandra). He is also preceded in death by his son, Mack “Mickey.”

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Shannon McCoy-Frith (David), who also carries on the family legacy as an ordained minister; grandchildren Dr. Kaila Frith, David “DJ” Frith, and Joshua; devoted niece Milon McCoy-Clement; his lifelong partner Laverne Garner; his cherished friend Shavon; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever remember his warmth, his artistry, and his unwavering strength.
