FACE MASKS ARE REQUIREMENTS!!!
On a beautiful spring day on April 9, 1934, God Blessed the late Katherine Drane Ogan and Hurley Ogan, Sr. with a beautiful baby boy. They named their darling baby boy Richard Louis Ogan. Richard was the seventh child born to this Blessed union.
Richard grew up in the New Providence, TN township of Clarksville, TN. He was educated in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School system. Richard’s Christian experience began at an early age. He was baptized and joined Greenhill Baptist Church where he was an active participant in the children’s choir, and he attended Sunday School regularly.
Richard graduated from Burt High School in Clarksville, TN in the class of 1952. Richard loved sports. While in high school, Richard played linebacker and center on his high school football team. In addition, Richard won an athletic scholarship to attend Claflin College in South Carolina. Also, Richard loved playing baseball in his community with his family and neighbors; and he was a lifelong baseball fan. Richard shared his love of baseball and football with both his children and grandchildren. Richard attended Tennessee A&I State University in Nashville, TN, where he studied Electrical Engineering. His academic experiences led him to become a lifelong learner, an avid reader, and process engineer eager to streamline and simplify processes. Also, while an undergraduate student, Richard participated in the early civil rights movement. He participated in the downtown Sit In movement to desegregate Woolworth’s and many other freedom marches in the Nashville area.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army, and he received an honorable discharge in 1959. On December 28, 1964, he married his longtime sweetheart, Florence Andrews. From this union, God Blessed the couple with two wonderful children: Winiford and Yuvette.
Over the years, Richard held many engineering positions with Gentilles in Kettering, OH; Wright Patterson AFP in Dayton, OH; the US Army Corps of Engineers in Dayton, OH. In 1971, Richard accepted a position with the US Environmental Protection Agency in RTP, NC where provided over 38 years of faithful service. Also, Richard joined West Durham Baptist Church in the mid 1970’s and encouraged his family to also join.
Richard proved to be a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to all that knew him. He was a focused, strong, and hardworking man who believed in the dignity of meaningful work. He was always present to support and uplift his family in any way he could. Similarly, Richard was resilient, courageous, and fearless--unafraid to take a stand and speak out on causes he believed in regardless of whom it affected. Richard’s trademarks were his pensive eyes, and his beautiful smile.
Richard was an avid reader and historian. In retirement, Richard loved spending time with his family, traveling, listening to classical and contemporary jazz music, and gardening. Richard was an outstanding repairman, and he could build or repair almost anything-- including plumbing and electricity.
After waging a valiant battle for many years, Richard earned his heavenly wings on May 1, 2023. Richard leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife, Florence; his eldest daughter, Deborah; his beloved daughter and caregiver, Yuvette; and, his dedicated son, Winiford; several grandchildren, and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
