Richard Peacock Sr. Obituary

RICHARD AVON PEACOCK, Sr., son of the late James Otis and Valeria Thompson Peacock was born in Durham, NC on January 6, 1951. He transitioned from his earthly body to his eternal home on February 20, 2020. He was preceded in death by his sister, Verna Mae Cann.

Richard was educated in Durham Public Schools and attended North Carolina Central University where he played football and ran track. He was quite the athlete and was an avid swimmer who enjoyed the time he spent as a lifeguard.

He served in the United States Navy as Master-at-Arms. He was employed as an electrician with the American Tobacco Company for 16 years. He was a shipping clerk with LSG Sky Chefs where he retired after 20 years.

In his early years, he was a member of Kyles Temple AME Zion Church. He joined North East Baptist Church in 2004 and became a faithful member where he really enjoyed his Sunday School Class.

He married the former Patricia DeWitt Ellis in 2006. They delighted in ushering at church quarterly as a married couple.

Richard was a good and decent man who loved God and his family. He enjoyed playing chess and backgammon with his son, Ricky whom he adored. Despite the pain he often felt over the years in his physical body, he would say “It could be worse”. His faith in God never wavered.

We will miss Richard’s smile, sense of humor as well as the many life stories that he enjoyed sharing. We looked forward to his many phone calls especially at birthdays. It was always a treat hearing Richard declare that he was a “staunch” fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Richard leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife Patricia DeWitt Peacock; his loving son Richard “Ricky” A. Peacock, Jr., son L. DeWitt Ellis, daughter Lakendra D. Ellis; grandsons Tavon A. Peacock, Ivan D. Jenkins; brothers James Bobby Peacock (Sarah), Randolph A. Peacock (Albertena); sisters Valeria A. Peacock, Phyllis P. Perry (Isaiah); nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
