Ricky Lynn Cooper, Sr. began his journey November 22, 1955in Durham North Carolina with his parents, Wallace Lewis Cooper and Eva Lee McAllister Cooper. A beloved husband, father, brother and friend to many, Ricky Lynn Cooper, at age 66, completed his journey on March 16, 2022 at Duke University Hospital.
Ricky was educated in the Durham City Public School system, graduating from Hillside High School with the distinguished Class of 197. He furthered his education at Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, graduating with a BS Degree in Science. It was during this time that he began his musical career with John Pressly and Lester Shaw. Ricky and John relocated to New York City to pursue their musical careers. It was here that they formed the musical group “Pressly and Cooper” and performed continuously for five years. Also, during this time, Ricky was a Supervisor in the cable industry in New York City.
Returning home in 1988, he continued his singing by lifting up the name of Jesus through song. He used his melodious voice to bring joy to the congregation at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. Always happy, he touched many lives. He was such a loving person, that never met a stranger.
Ricky married the love of his life, Mable Yates. They enjoyed 49 years of marital bliss. To this union, they were blessed with three (3) children and 5 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ricky was predeceased by his son, Ricky L. Cooper, Jr.; two brothers, Jerry and Frederick; and two brothers-in-law, Barry Morris and Robert Yates.
Ricky is survived by his wife, Mable Yates Cooper; children Antwoine Y. Cooper, Kenrick Y. Cooper (Kadreon) and Eric Cooper; grandchildren Lerico Y. Cooper, Alaysia Hinton, Rickey Pettiford, and Damarios Y. Cooper, Kamyla Cooper; Lauren Francis; sisters Ruth C. Hall and Portia C. Morris; brothers Louis Cooper and Anthony Cooper; aunt Deborah Cooper; sisters-in-law Hazelene Y. Edward (Robert), Mary Hill and Kathy Yates; brothers-in-law Eddie Yates (Wanda), William Yates (Cheryl) and Alonza Yates (Angela).
