Robert Randolph Young, Sr. transitioned peacefully Sunday, March 8, 2020 at 2:55 PM at his residence in Durham, NC
Born in Stovall, NC, Mr. Young lived in North Carolina most of his life, except for the four years when he lived in LaGrange, Georgia. He finished Mary Potter High School in Oxford, NC and then attended North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, NC. Upon graduation, he was awarded his Bachelor of Science Degree from the School of Engineering in Industrial Arts. He was employed as the first Industrial Arts teacher at Kight High School, a model school, in LaGrange, Georgia. This is where he met the love of his life, Mary Mason.
After he married Mary, they moved to Durham, North Carolina. Mr. Young, affectionately called “Rand”, by his family and friends was hired as the first Industrial Arts teacher in Durham County and worked at Merrick Moore School for four years before transferring to Carrington Junior high where he worked until retiring in 1987.
Rand especially liked working with wood, plastics and leather. He taught students how to make many household items such as beds, lamps, clocks, pocketbooks, belts and small hobby items. While working as a teacher, he served as the treasurer of sporting events and attended all of his school’s sporting events.
Mr. Young, a Christian, was a kind, gentle, patient and even tempered man who never displayed bursts of anger in public. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist church of Stovall where he served as a Trustee. He loved God, his family and members of his church. He attended services regularly until he became disabled a year ago.
He was active in his community. He was instrumental in organizing the Neighborhood Labor Day Picnic and a Pinochle Club. He was a master Bridge player who belonged to the College View Duplicate Bridge club, the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Sectional and the National American Bridge Association, Inc. He also belonged to the Super Bowl Party Club.
Rand was predeceased by his parents, Oscar Samuel Young and Mattie Philpott Young; his two brothers, Joseph Young and William Young; two sisters, Lillian Young Holland and Edith Young Brooks and one grandson, Robert (Robbie) Randolph Young III.
Mr. Robert Randolph Young (Rand) leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of sixty two years, Mary Mason Young; two beloved children in Durham, NC, Yvette Charisse Young and Robert Randolph (Bobby) Young, Jr (Felecia); seven grandchildren, Jewel Charisse Young, Shaney Joy Young of Atlanta Ga, Christopher Jamal Pitts (Keneshia), Ariana Young, all of Durham Paris Robert Young (Thailand), Brendon Robert Young, Knight of Durham, NC ; six great-grandchildren, Jade, Kamille, Kaycee, Kayleigh, Ziya, and Keith; two sisters, Ella Thorpe of Baltimore, MD and Alice Jenkins of Greensboro, NC ; three sisters-in-law, Lillian Mason Holeman (Linwood) of Fairburn GA, Cathern Mason Evans of Raleigh, NC and Margaret Young of Brooklyn , NY; nieces, Regina Miller(Anthony) Linda Riddick (LEE) , Yvonne Hoagland (David) , Crystal Denise Mason-Bowens (David), Irmgard Mason-Glover (Jimmy), Crystal Evans, Shelly Mason, Babette Hitchcock (Brian), Laquita Gilfillian (Basil),Felecia Jenkins; nephews, Toney Gregory (Anne), Timothy Holland, Bernard Young (Virginia), Robert Mason, Jr. (Victoria), Joseph Lunsford( Alice), Tyronne Evans ,James Evans, Jr (Robin); his special companion, Smokey; extended family, Hedy Hunt Echard, Nichole Echard-Jarman, Patrice Echard, Claretha Woody, Tracy Woody,Thelma Lee(Cuz),Oliver Hodge, Constance Pattillo, Alicia Jones, Mallory Tucker Williams, Claudia Allen; and a host of other relatives and friends.
