Selena Jae (Mebane) Hunter

Mrs. Selena Jae Mebane Hunter was born a twin and the oldest of six siblings in Mebane, NC on August 3rd, 1942 to the late Mr. William F. and Sarah Wilhelmena Mebane Sr. She departed this life on Sunday morning, October 20th, 2024.

Her formative education began at Mebane Elementary School and ended at Graham High School, Class of 1960.Upon high school graduation, Selena matriculated to Winston Salem State University. While a student at Winston Salem State University, Selena met the love of her life, John A. Hunter, Sr. while they were both students. Selena and John were married on August 1, 1965, and remained inseparable until John passed on July 10, 2012. They later became the proud parents to John Hunter, Jr., their only child.

Selena taught at Lee Elementary School in Sanford, NC for two years before securing a job teaching in the Durham City Schools. Selena taught for 28 years in Durham, NC before retiring.  During this time, Selena continued her pursuit of education and obtained a master’s degree in Elementary Education from North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC in 1979.

Throughout her life, Selena maintained a close relationship with the Lord as a Christian having become baptized at the age of 12 years old at Mebane First Presbyterian Church. As a child, Selena enjoyed attending Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and other youth activities sponsored by her church.

After marrying John, Selena transferred her church membership to White Rock Baptist Church in Durham, NC. She remained an active member of White Rock for over 50 years until her death. As a member of White Rock, Selena served on the Board of Christian Education initially as secretary under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Edith Johnson. Selena also sang in the adult choir until her health precluded her continued participation. Through years of membership at White Rock, Selena was engaged in many other activities including teaching and Vacation Bible School, serving as secretary and Board Member of the White Rock Baptist Church Child Development Center for over 22 years, and membership in the Shephard Williams Womack Missionary Circle of the Church.

Selena loved God, her church, family, friends, neighbors, and community. Her community activities involved Life Membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and membership in the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter.  Selena was also a member of the James E. Shephard LaSertoma Club, the Durham Alumni Chapter of WSSU, and a life member of the national chapter of WSSU. Selena’s passion was working with children in the AKA center programs in school and church. Selena enjoyed traveling with her family, meeting with her Graham High School 60’s class, playing cards with Les Cardette Pinochle Club, reading, and watching her favorite soap operas.

Selena and John were engaged in many social activities during their marriage. As staunch alumnus of WSSU, Selena, and John never missed a WSSU Homecoming.  Nor did they ever miss a North Carolina A&T Homecoming, the Alma mater of John, Jr. and other family members. On the rare occasions that the Homecomings of WSSU and A&T were on the same Saturday, John and Selena would attend the WSSU game, then head to Greensboro to enjoy family and friends for the evening. John and Selena spent many summers and Christmas vacations at Kiawah Island, South Carolina. While bringing in most New Year’s with friends in Hilton Head, South Carolina. 

Selena also enjoyed volunteering to assist with voter registration and participation during many election seasons. We will always remember Selena’s love of life, joy, smile, and kindness to others. She will be missed by her family in our gatherings and our vacations. Selena was easy to love and easy to laugh. We thank God for the time we were blessed to have Selena in our lives. 

She was preceded in death by her Parents, and her beloved husband, John A. Hunter, Sr.  She is also preceded in death by her Twin Sister Phelena M. Hughes, Brothers, Howard Mebane, and Omega Mebane, her “Cousin-Sister,” Betty Smith, along with Sister-In-Law, Wilma G. Hunter, and Brothers-In-Law, Walter A. Hunter, Jr. and Charles H. Matthews.

Selena is survived by her devoted Son and Daughter-In-Law, John A. Hunter, Jr., (QuRita), Durham, NC, loving Grandson, John A. Hunter, III, (Shayla), and Great-Grandson, Bryce Miles Hunter, of Gallatin, TN. Selena also leaves to cherish her memory her Sister Brenda Tapp, Charlotte, NC,  Brother William Mebane, Jr. Durham, NC, Sisters-In-Law, Janet M. Hunter Matthews, Albany, NY, Madelynn G. Hunter, Charlotte, NC,  Phyllis P. Mebane, Winston Salem, NC,  Diedra Mebane, Charlotte, NC,   Brother-In-Law, Dr. James E. Hunter, Petersburg, VA, Nieces, Pamela A. Hunter, Esq. Charlotte, NC, Dr. Sharon M. Hunter, Charlotte, NC, Jacqueline R. Hunter, Bowie, MD, Shannon Berry, (Stephone) Columbia, SC, Karen Rasco, (Shelton), Greensboro, NC, Nephews, Charles H. Matthews, (Tracie), and their daughter Ayanna Matthews, Philadelphia, PA. Codell Hughes, Winston Salem, NC, Christopher Tapp, Durham, NC, Jamal Mebane, (Doe-Dee), and daughter, Isabella Mebane, Charlotte, NC, Howard Mebane, II, Baltimore, MD, Cousins, Franklin Goodwin, Georgia, Mary Ruth Johnson, (Stanley), Chapel Hill, NC, Godson, Dallas Lee, Winston Salem, NC, and a host of other family members. Selena also leaves to cherish her memory of her extended family which she loved at Bartlett Reserved Independent Living, along with her lifelong friendships, classmates, and neighbors.
