The service for Ms. Johnson-Canty will be live streamed on the Facebook Page of Fisher Memorial Funeral Parlor.
Stephanie Johnson-Canty was born on April 22, 1955 to Dorothy Hamlin-Johnson and Luther Johnson in Jamaica, Queens, New York. Growing up, Stephanie developed a love for dolls, art, sewing, and reading that only intensified with time. She also loved basketball, helping others, and spending time with her sons.
Stephanie attended Christ the King for parochial school and Delahanty High School prior to enrolling in York College. At York, she obtained a Bachelor of Art degree in Psychology and a certificate in Social Work. When she was younger, Stephanie worked as a candy striper at a local hospital, facilitating her love of caring for people. After graduating, Stephanie enrolled in nursing school and became a Registered Nurse. Working at Jamaica and Bellevue Hospitals gave her the confidence to pursue new challenges. Moving to Durham, NC in 1988 she started working at the VA Medical Center. After a few years she moved on to work for Duke University Medical Center, Durham Regional, and finally back to the VA. While working at the VA, Stephanie decided to go back to school to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Graduating on May 1, 2004, Stephanie celebrated her achievement as well as her twin sons’ 21st birthdays. Stephanie continued to work at the VA until her retirement in 2015.
Stephanie will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her. She is survived by son Keith C. Canty (Aurora, CO – Simone Brackett), older brother Luther Stephen Johnson (Alexandria, VA), and countless family members and friends. Stephanie was predeceased in death by son Kevin C. Canty and parents Dorothy Hamlin-Johnson and Luther Johnson.
