Vermel Lewis Hayes, affectionally known as “Verm,” “mama,” “grandma,” “great grand,” and “auntie,” was born to the late Theodore Rosevelt Lewis and Beulah Sampson Lewis on April 28,1934 in Durham, North Carolina. Surrounded by her loving family, she transitioned from her earthly life to eternal rest early Tuesday morning, January 30, 2024.
Vermel attended Durham Public Schools in Durham, North Carolina. She worked at Farmer’s Exchange Poultry for many years. She changed careers and became employed at Liggett & Myers Tobacco Factory, where she worked until retirement.
As a child, she attended Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with her parents and siblings. At Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church, she gave her life to Christ and was baptized. While at Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church, she was a member of the Melody Chorus and was crowned as Ms. Oak Grove. In 1991, she transferred her membership to Greater Joy Missionary Baptist Church. She left Greater Joy to support her grandson in his ministry, Greater Works Empowerment Center. When her grandson became the pastor of Lakeview Missionary Baptist Church, she became a member and faithfully attended until her health declined. She faithfully listened to Sunday services and attended Bible study weekly via Zoom.
She loved watching Steve Harvey’s Family Feud and the Judge shows, specifically Judge Mathis. She enjoyed riding around with her grandson in his BMW, which she referred to as “My car.” She was family-oriented and loved spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents: her daughter, Janice Yvonne Hayes; her sisters, Henrietta Lewis Buie and Janie Lewis Robinson; her brothers, Theodore Roosevelt Lewis, Jr., Harvey Williams, and John Henry Sampson.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her beloved, faithful daughter, Regina Hayes Lipscomb; her grandson, who was the apple of her eye, Pastor Shawn D. Lipscomb, Sr. (Donna); great grandchildren, Valencia, Shawn Jr., Christel, Jade, and Jaleel Lipscomb and Lovell Little; great-great grandchildren, Caden Swann, Cataleya and Naomi Lipscomb and a bonus great-great grandson, Dayvon Hernandez; nieces, Valencia Robinson Swain (Jessie), Sheri Buie Smith (Louis) and nephew, Milton Bernard Robinson (Queenie): special Goddaughters, Tara Glasper, Brenda Mack, Bernadette McKoy, and Patricia Worley: and God-brother, Jerry Langston.
