Walter “Papa” Atwater passed away comfortably of natural causes on September 16, 2024 after a wonderful visit surrounded by all of his children, grandchildren, and Great grands. He was born August 1, 1933, in Chatham County, NC, the son of Mathew Gilbert Atwater and Eleanor Thompson Kittrell.
Walter attended and graduated DuBois High School in Wake Forest, NC. Soon thereafter, he enlisted in the Army. Walter married his high sweetheart MaryRose (Boone) Atwater of Wake Forest in 1957 and continued his education at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC where he became a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and many educational entities. Walter always enjoyed helping and teaching others. His greatest
passion was teaching High Risk and Special education individuals. He always found teachable moments and taught for over 50 years. Walter and Mary Rose shared 66 years of marriage and were blessed with two children A’Lanros Atwater and Tonja Atwater of Greensboro, NC.
In addition to his parents (2) and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings Katie Thompson, Willie Kittrell, and Betty Jean Atwater. He is survived by his children (2) and loving siblings Robert Kittrell, Bettystar Morgan, Mack Kittrell, Boot (Eleanor) Kittrell, Tracey Brandon and Julia Tina Atwater. He is also survived by his grandchildren Victoria Adela King, Uvika Atwater Joseph, Ptika Atwater Joseph and great-grandchildren Unias King, Jayvyn King,
Ayaianna King, Jahzara King, Chasen Atwater Joseph, Channing Logan, Chalan Logan, Charleigh Taborn, Kross Womack, and Dream Farmer. He is also survived by a host of in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
A viewing will be held at 2pm at New Hope Baptist Church, 581 New Hope Church Rd., Apex, NC. Followed by a service of remembrance at 3pm.
