Mrs. Gladys Lucille Brown Elliott was born in Durham, North Carolina on September 3, 1926. Her parents were the late Samuel M. Brown and the late Maebell S. Brown.

Her mother died at an early age and her father went to New Jersey for work. Gladys was raised by her grandparents (the late Melvin and Nancy Brown), and her aunt, the late Mrs. Lettie B. Herndon.

Her early religious affiliation was with St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church. Membership continued until her death.

Gladys attended Durham Public Schools. She graduated from Hillside High School in 1946. A short time later, she entered the School of Nursing for LPN in Durham and trained at Duke Hospital. Later, she moved with husband James to Wilson, North Carolina and obtained employment at Wilson’s Mercy Hospital. They returned to Durham a few years later. Gladys received employment at NC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill (now UNC Hospital), where she spent the rest of her employment years.

Gladys and James M. Elliott met while working after-school jobs at the Jack Tar Hotel. They were married on November 28, 1948. From their union Lettie Winona Elliott was born. They were married for 58 years prior to James’ death.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Lettie W. Elliott (Primary care giver); her grandson, Courtney James Elliott; her great grandson, James Brian Elliott and a host of other family members and friends.
