FACE MASKS ARE STRONGLY URGED!!!
With deep sorrow and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Mrs. Amelia Bagley Brown, a beloved matriarch and devoted servant of the Lord. Amelia passed away peacefully in her home in Durham, North Carolina, early on Sunday, November 3, 2024. Born on October 10, 1927, in Durham, North Carolina, Amelia was one of ten children born to Revered Tillmon and Louise Porteat Bagley.
From her earliest days, Amelia was surrounded by faith and family. Amelia became a young member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she was part of a spiritual community under pastorate of her father, Reverend Tillmon Bagley, one of the church's founding figures. Her spiritual journey continued at West Durham Baptist Church, where she shared her voice with the Gospel Choir and lent her hands to the Kitchen Committee until health challenges hindered her attendance. Her unwavering devotion to her faith community remained steadfast throughout her life. Amelia's formative years were spent at Pearsontown School, a humble one room school on Fayetteville Street. Later, she proudly graduated as part of Hillside High School's Class of 1947. Her commitment to her alma mater was evident as she served as class secretary up until its conclusion in 2021, warmly reliving fond memories during reunions with lifelong friends. Amelia was blessed with a union that bore many fruits.
She shared 37 years of marriage with her beloved husband, David Brown, and together they welcomed their daughter, Davecene Lynette, on March 11, 1956. Davecene embraced motherhood with the arrival of her two children, Tyler and David, who also brought joy to Amelia's life. Beginning in 1965, Amelia dedicated 34 years of service to North Carolina University at Chapel Hill, where she excelled as a supervisor overseeing various dormitories. Many students affectionately called her “Mom,” a testament to her nurturing spirit and enduring influence, remaining connected with her throughout the years. As the cherished Historian of the Bagley Family Reunion, Amelia was the heart and soul of our gatherings. She found joy traversing the east coast to soak up family moments. At the milestone 40th Reunion, we celebrated her as the oldest member of the Osborn and Nancy Simon Bagley lineage. Amelia was a respected member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rose Chapter No. 003. But it was her culinary skills that truly warmed our hearts and bellies. A visit to Amelia's was never complete without carrying a plate of her delicious dishes home. And oh, her Chow Chow! Made with love and packed for her nieces and nephews in Boston, it was the perfect embodiment of her nurturing spirit.
Amelia is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, and eight siblings.
Amelia leaves behind a loving legacy cherished by her grandchildren, Tyler and David Shipman, and David’s fiancé, Tammicka Morgan, who all tenderly cared for her in her final days. She is also survived by her greatgranddaughters, Tay'la and Brielle, her sister, Margaret Allen of Boston, Massachusetts, and an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. As we celebrate the life of Mrs. Amelia Bagley Brown, we find solace in her deep faith, enduring love, and the impact she made on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit will forever illuminate our hearts.
May she rest in eternal peace, embraced by the grace and glory of God
