Gracye M Smith Currie was born in Durham, N.C. on September 8th 1947. The youngest of Nine daughters to the late Rosa and James Smith.
She departed this earth very peacefully on Saturday June 18th, 2022 at the home of her caregivers, Dennis and Cynthia Currie in Concord, NC.
She was preceded in death by four(4) sisters, Mary, Irene, Dorothy and Florence.
Gracye was a loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was educated in Durham Public Schools, studied Business at Craft Business School in Durham, NC. Gracye worked as a Transcriptionist with the Veterans Administration and received numerous of recommendations and certificates for her outstanding work. Gracye retired after over thirty years of employment. After retirement she worked as a self employed transcriptionist for various doctors until deciding to just relax for a while. However, she didn't relax, she continued to do what she loved doing, decorating her home and others homes. Her love for house plants made her the “go to person” for advice on taking care of plants. Her real love was caring for her only grandson at the time, DeAndre until he moved out west with his dad, Dennis. Dennis made it a priority to talk to his mom every day for 20 years while residing in South Dakota.
Many years ago, Gracye knew she needed Chist more in her life, after visiting several churches, she found a place to call home with Greater Emmanuel Temple Pentecostal Church in Durham, NC until her health began to fail.
A faithful and caring wife, Gracye was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life Charles Currie for fifty years and remained married until her departure. To this union there were two sons Dennis Andre (Cynthia) and Cedric (Tasha). Gracye loved her two grandsons, DeAndre and Dennis Jr. She was happiest when buying presents for them and really everyone.
She also leaves to cherish her memories, four sisters, Gussie Stubbs, Virginia Daye, Ruby Smith and Helen Belton, all of Durham, NC, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
The last two years of Gracye’s life she was made to feel so very special by her daughter-in-law and caregiver, Cynthia Currie, who made her look and feel like a Queen, getting her hair professionally done, getting professional manicures and pedicures, assuring Gracye had any foods that she desired.
